Wednesday, Aug. 14. iqoi THC. FUMPTER MINER 1 1 OR & N IMPROVEMENTS Vast Amount Will be Finished This Year. Improvement work on the Oregon Itnilroail & Navigation company's Hiiph is progressing rapidly. Among tliu im provementH on which work is now actu ally nnilor way, are the following, as giv en to the press ollicially hy olllecrs of that road : A steel girder bridge, 05 feet long, near Pnrkeo, Oregon, to replace a pile trestle. A steel girder bridge, 1)5 feet long, lie tween Durkee and Weatherby, Oregon, to replace a pile trestle. A steel girder bridge, 95 feet long, be tween Weatherby and Huntington, to replace a Howe truss bridge. A steel girder bridge, 80 feet long, be tween WeatheVby and Huntington, to replace a pile trestle. A steel girder bridge, 05 feet long, near Huntington, to replace a pile trestle. A steel girder bridgo, !!0 feet long, near Huntington, to replace a pile tres tle. A steel girder bridge, 05 feet long, be tween Hiparia and Hay, to replace a IIuwu truss bridge. A steel girder bridge, 14 feet long, near Klhurton, to replace a pile trestle. A steel girder bridge, 14 feet long, near Garfield, to replace a pile trestle. Three steel baidges, each 80 feet long, near Tokoa, to replace Howe truss bridges. Tlio following culverts will bo built, which will permit the frame trestles in those places to be tilled in and a solid embankment substituted therefor. Kight-foot arch culvert, 00 feet long, near Fairview. Twelve-foot arch culvert, 105 feet long, sixteen-foot arch cidvert, 100 feet long; six-foot arch culvert, 11!U feet long and another of the same size, 72 feet long, lietwcen Freeman and Chester. The foregoing makes a total of thir teen steel bridges and live concrete ma sonry arch culverts, nil to Ihi erected this year, the contract for the concrete abutments and masonry for the culverts having already been let. An order was placed some time ago with the Ameri can Hridge company for 1,502,000 jwunda of steel for suiKirstructureof some of the bridges. This order included three steel girdors to be erected on concrete abutments, which were put in last sea son on the changed lino between Kclio and Nolin. More important than any of the above is the contract for what will be known as the "Itoweua change of lino." Seven miles of entirely now road bed on chang ed locution will le built between Tunnel No. 3 und The Dalles. The reason for this improvement is that the present road is (juite crooked and will bo aban doned entirely between the points given. The present line has a maximum curva ture of ten degrees, while on the new lino it will bo but four degrees. The new line will be 1000 feet shorter than the old. Mining; b Business Needing Experience. A very encouraging feature of mining is that it lias become a settled business, and carries no greater hazard than any other business, that is when the indus try is carried on with the same intelli gence, and the same care, as other call ings. The merchant without previous training has no more right to undertake mining than the miner has to undertake merchandising. The doctor has no more right to expect success than the miner has to succeed hi surgery. But when op erated by men skilled in mining it iu safe and profitable. Machinery lias been iinented to meet every want of the miner, and genius stands ready to give her helping hand when occasion re (pilres. Speak your wants and the in ventor responds with .the machinery that seems almost human In the intel ligent manner in which it performs its labor. It is a willing slave, nlwavs obe dient, faithful and cthYient. Day by lay additions are made to man's power in wrestling with the earth, and day by day ho gains an ascendency. As the great mines are developed value is given to adjoining "prospects," and the miner, with Ids single prospect will lind it the source of sulllcicnt wealth in his latter days. So let us help the car of progres-s along, and not place obstructions in its path, l'ush mining industry, and the reward will come with the development of the mines. Dally Mining Reporter. II. O. linker has received a fresh con signment of water melons, cautlloupcs, fruits and vegetables at the Mill street market. Poultry delivered to order. TIMBER LAND, ACT JUNI: 3, 1878.
